Climate Resilient Communities and Sustainable Livelihood Initiatives for Pro-Poor, continuation
Due to erratic and rising rainfall and temperature patterns over the decades, climatic events in Pyuthan District have become increasingly unpredictable, leading to a higher frequency of climate-related hazards. Over the past three decades, Pyuthan has experienced a growing frequency of landslides, triggered by heavy precipitation, which has also caused floods and landslides. Between 1988 and 2022, Mandavi Rural Municipality experienced 33 landslides, which damaged 25 households, placed over 300 households at high risk, and destroyed infrastructure, including 8 irrigation systems and 5 drinking water sources. Additionally, from 1992 to 2022, the area faced 21 flooding events, resulting in the erosion of more than 100 hectares of agricultural land and damage to 8 irrigation systems, including lift irrigation facilities. Disaster Preparedness, Response, and Economic Recovery Plan, Mandavi, 2023). Similarly, Sarumarani Rural Municipality experienced 34 major landslides and 28 flood events between 1984 and 2020. These disasters placed over 600 households at high risk, impacted more than 80 hectares of agricultural land, and led to the destruction of 10 irrigation systems (Sarumarani Rural Municipality, 2024).
This project would aim to build the capacity of local governments and communities, foster sustainable livelihood opportunities, enhance community resilience, and develop localized climate adaptation strategies.
The development goal of the proposed project is “To remove knowledge, skills and capacity barriers for increased participation of local actors to climate action localization in Pyuthan”.
The objectives of the project are as follows:
Objective 1: Local Government and Community Levels strengthen their capacities on climate actions.
Objective 2: Targeted communities enhance their income from climate change resilient agricultural practices and entrepreneurial initiatives.
Objective 3: Local communities and institutions support offsetting greehouse gas emissions.
Working Area: Mandavi RM and Sarumarani RM, Pyuthan District
Project Duration: April 2025 – March 2028
