Conducting Schools Kitchen and Cooking Study (SKACS) in a range of schools in Nepal

There has been growing interest in transitioning school kitchens to clean cooking fuels, primarily on the basis that school kitchens can use a large amount of firewood, so substantial reductions in biomass fuel use (and gains in associated benefits) can be achieved by working with a single institution. It also provides an opportunity to reach many families with clean cooking messaging and some indirect experience of clean cooking. To date, little data is available on the amounts of energy used in school kitchens, which hampers efforts to justify the money required to fund clean cooking transitions.
This is mainly to support the adoption of electric cooking technologies in government schools to create a sustainable and healthier cooking environment. Currently, increasing the electricity demand is a key part of the Government of Nepal’s energy strategy. The Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) 3.0 updated in May 2025 highlights the expansion of the use of electric cookstoves to 15,000 institutions and firms.
Study Site: The study will be conducted in 15 schools within 5 districts of Nepal lying under Bagmati Province, Gandaki Province and Lumbini Province, namely Pyuthan, Kathmandu, Gulmi, Tanahun and Chitwan.
Objective: The study aims to collect baseline data from the 15 selected schools as per the SKACS protocol.
Project Duration: January – March 2026
