Advancing sustainable energy and climate solutions across Nepal

About PEEDA

Poverty Alleviation Through Sustainable Energy Development

About PEEDA

People, Energy and Environment Development Association (PEEDA) was established in 1997 with a clear purpose: to contribute to Nepal’s development by promoting sustainable use of energy, natural resources, and local capacities.

PEEDA was founded with the belief that Nepal’s indigenous resources, local knowledge, and community capacities can play a vital role in reducing poverty, improving livelihoods, and strengthening sustainable development. Since its establishment, PEEDA has worked to mobilize local and external resources, promote appropriate energy solutions, strengthen institutions, and support communities in making effective use of available natural and technical resources.

Over the years, PEEDA has expanded its work from renewable energy promotion to broader engagement in energy, environment, water resources, climate resilience, research, capacity building, and policy advocacy. Its work continues to be guided by the principle that sustainable development must reach the poor, underserved, and climate-vulnerable communities.

Our History

Our History

PEEDA’s journey began with a focus on strengthening Nepal’s renewable energy sector at a time when access to reliable and sustainable energy remained a major development challenge. The organization recognized that energy is not only a technical service, but also a foundation for economic opportunity, social well-being, environmental protection, and poverty reduction.

Since 1997, PEEDA has contributed to Nepal’s energy and development landscape through community engagement, research, institutional development, training, policy dialogue, and collaboration with diverse stakeholders. Its interventions have emphasized grassroots participation, practical innovation, and the use of locally appropriate solutions.

PEEDA has also played a supportive role in the development of institutions working in Nepal’s energy, environment, and water resource sectors. It holds 50.08% shares in Hydro Lab Pvt. Ltd., which provides specialized services to private entities, institutions, and government agencies. PEEDA has also supported the establishment of the Center for Energy and Environment Development (CEED), founded in 2017 to provide services in energy and environment for the enhancement of community livelihoods.

Through these engagements, PEEDA has contributed not only to project implementation, but also to sectoral learning, technical services, and institutional strengthening in Nepal.

Mission, Vision & Objectives

Mission

PEEDA is an NGO dedicated to improving livelihoods of communities, particularly the poor, by collective utilization of renewable energy resources, while ensuring due care for the environment. This is achieved by establishing institutions active in the renewable energy sector, promoting cooperation between relevant stakeholders to undertake development projects, advocating for policy & regulatory reforms, and undertaking targeted research. The principle behind the activities of PEEDA is that the poor of Nepal, who live mainly in rural areas, should share in the benefits of Nepal’s renewable energy resources, but this will not happen without dedicated and sustained effort. PEEDA is committed to the values of empowering individuals & communities to help themselves, non-discrimination, and maintaining good relationships.

Vision

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. Large proportions of the population live in the mountainous regions of Nepal, surviving on subsistence agriculture with no access to electricity with which other economies may be possible. Deforestation is a major environmental problem in Nepal and is made worse by increasing population densities and the subsistence economy. Hydropower and biofuels are some of Nepal’s renewable resources, which could be harnessed to provide power to a larger proportion of the population and/or be sold to provide a source of income. This would raise living standards, reduce current human impacts on the environment, and provide general welfare to the people, and particularly the rural poor. PEEDA’s vision for Nepal is that poverty will be substantially reduced through, among other initiatives, effective, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable development of renewable energy resources. Its ultimate vision is that all the people of Nepal will enjoy economic security because of the effective utilization of Nepal’s renewable energy resources.

Objective

The objective of the organization is to improve livelihoods of communities, particularly the poor, by communal utilization of renewable energy resources, while ensuring due care for the environment. The main objectives are:

- To conduct studies and research related to renewable energy sources of Nepal and to raise public awareness in the rural areas about efficient energy use. - To disseminate information among the public about the use of electric energy, electrical equipment usage, efficient utilization of energy and its benefits. - To conduct research and studies on the application of electricity and electrical technologies in agriculture and small enterprises and livelihood upliftment and to share the acquired knowledge and findings in the rural areas. - To conduct the programs aimed at addressing climate change, mitigation of the climate change impacts and to promote environmental conservation. - To support projects related to energy and protection of the environment to improve welfare and economic development of poor people, - To conduct studies and research on renewable energy technology and to implement catalyst programs for its promotion and adoption. - To contribute to the development of renewable energy in Nepal, including hydropower and to implement and promote initiatives that enhance the economic development of the diverse rural communities.
